ProfileGrid v3.0 – Multi-Group Users and Group Manager

What’s ProfileGrid v3.0 and what does it means for you?

User Profile with Groups

User Profile with Groups

From the beginning User Groups have been central to ProfileGrid. When we first envisaged the plugin, User Groups played the role of profile types. That meant, each group can have its own set of profile fields. It also meant, groups were mutually exclusive – a user can only exist in one group at a time. This allowed admins to create unique profile types (for site members) and independently control them.

But as ProfileGrid’s adoption grew, we constantly received feedback requesting multi-group feature. We gradually realized it was more important for admins to allow members on their sites to subscribe to more than one group, than creating mutually exclusive profile types. Finally, ProfileGrid 3.0 introduces this feature to the core plugin. Now every user can be member of multiple groups.

Additionally, Group Leader has been renamed as Group Manager. You can change the label based on your industry. For example, you can name the Group Manager as Admin, Captain, Leader or whatever else that suits you. ProfileGrid 3.0 creates a platform to expand this feature considerably. Launching concurrently, Frontend Group Manager extension allows Group Managers to manage their groups on Frontend. They can invite or suspend members, moderate posts, manage membership requests, etc.

Open vs. Closed Groups

Join WordPress User Group

New Join Group Button

ProfileGrid 3.0 introduces a new option in user group settings called Group Type. A User Group can now be either Open or Closed. Open Groups work just like how they do now – anyone can register and join the group directly (provided you have Auto Approval turned on). Also, all Open Groups will now have ‘Join’ button on Group Pages. This bypasses the form-filling process and provides instant membership to the Group. All your current User Groups will automatically convert to Open Type Groups upon upgrading to version 3.0.

This also shifts the focus of ProfileGrid from a user registration plugin to a more community-oriented plugin. It is a deliberate step, since in coming weeks new dedicated enhancements will be introduced to registration part.

Now what does Closed Group means? As the name implies, a Closed Group does not offers automatic membership. To join a Closed Group:

  1. User membership request must be approved by you or the Group Manager OR
  2. User is invited to the Group by the Group Manager OR
  3. User is added to the Group by the Group Manager OR
  4. You assign Group to the user by editing User in Dashboard à Multi-Select replaces Radio Options in the User Group field.

Membership requests can be sent by clicking Join Groupbutton on the Group Page. If you have Frontend Group Manager installed, a Group Manager can moderate incoming membership requests. If not, we are introducing a new section named Requestsin Dashboard area for you to manage Membership requests.

Changes to the User Profiles

With multi-group memberships now a thing, User Profiles have changed a bit.

Header Area

User Profile header area can now display multiple Group badges/ icons.

Groups Tab

A new profile tab Groups now appears among other tabs. It displays all the Groups current user is member of. This is publicly visible. Some Group related actions can also be performed right from the Groups tab.

New Notification
Group Joining Notification

Group Joining Notifications

A new Group joining notification has been added. It appears when the User joins a Group.

Profile Fields

Profile fields continue to be attached to the Group. But now if a user is member of multiple Groups, fields and sections from all the Groups will appear in About tab.

Email Notifications

With addition of so many new workflows, we have added new set of email notification and pre-built email templates. You may want to set these up with custom content based on your site’s configuration.

Leaving Groups

Leave WordPress User Group

New Leave Group Button

Users can leave Groups by clicking Leave Group button on the Group page or from drop down menu inside Group card in Groups tab.

Group Managers

Group Manager Area

New Group Manager Area

With Frontend Group Manager extension, Group Managers now have a lot more control. A new Settings tab on frontend now appears on Group page if the user is Manager of the Group. This provides a central area for moderating group related activities. These include, but are not limited to:

  1. Suspending Users
  2. Moderating membership requests
  3. Moderating member posts pending approval
  4. Changing post status
  5. Appending notes to member posts
  6. Broadcasting messages to members using in-built messaging system
  7. Invite users not registered on the site to become members
  8. Add members from other groups
  9. Batch operations

Hi there, this is really great news! Membership of multiple groups is an essential feature, that has been really lacking so far. Could you please let us know when version 3.0 is planned to be released?

I like this plugin, much more than all of the others that I’ve looked at and tested. I am planning on using groups to manage the group/profile types (e.g.; membership levels). Is there a way to turn off the ability to “leave group” for specific groups? I am planning on using the default group for general/open membership – so I don’t want members to be able to remove themselves from the group (especially if they’ve paid to be in the group). I also planned on another group for the organization leadership (elected leaders). Again; I don’t want those members to be able to remove themselves from the group. Other groups are fine to self-remove, but I’d like to turn this option on/off.

The feature to turn on/off “leave group” button is unavailable as of now. However, we have analyzed and added the feature to our road-map list. It will be included in one of our upcoming versions.

Hi has the option to remove the leave group button for selected groups been implemented?
I am also very interested in this functionality.

        1. ProfileGrid

          Hi,

Thank you for writing to us.

As of now, the feature to hide/remove the leave group button is not available. This is in our roadmap and you will see some action on it soon.

Feel free to get back to us for further assistance.

          Thank you,

          1. Miseon

            Hi,
Wondered if this feature has been added yet?

          2. ProfileGrid

The muti group and group manager features are already in the plugin. For more details please visit our extensions page.

sir . i want to disable the cover image section in the profile . how to do it ? kindly guide me on this issue . Thanks

    1. ProfileGrid | Prabs

Currently, no direct option is available to hide or disable cover image on the profile page. However, as work-around you may hide or disable cover image by creating custom template or applying CSS. You can create a new template by copying and renaming “default” folder inside “[plugin root]/public/partials/themes” to “[your current theme directory]/profilegrid-user-profiles-groups-and-communities/themes”, and edit HTML or CSS as required.

To change profile page template you need to edit ‘profile-tpl.php’ file.

    Hi,
Is it possible to have different users as group managers of the same group? So, more than 1 manager?
    Thanks

  10. axel Capou

I am a French user of your plugin which is great I think to take your pack in the near future 🙂

I would like to know there is an option to have a page personalize a group to be able to put shortcode

I also saw that each group create in group manager had a page create for the group in question but impossible to display text or other different on each one of them

    1. ProfileGrid

Thank you for your feedback. There is no direct option to add shortcode or text on group page.

You can achieve this by creating custom template or applying CSS. You can create a new template by copying and renaming “default” folder inside “[plugin root]/public/partials/themes” to “[your current theme directory]/profilegrid-user-profiles-groups-and-communities/themes and edit HTML or CSS as required.

To change group page template you need to edit ‘group-tpl.php’ file, It is not group-specific so changes will apply to all group pages.

As an alternative using our extension “Custom Group Fields,” you can create and add custom fields to groups.

    Hi,

I created 2 group, Teacher and Student. The registration page can only accept 1 id. I try to create 2 registration with diffrent id, it still refer to the main id setting. Any workaround for this?

    1. ProfileGrid

You will need to set the default registration page in ProfileGrid settings. You can do this by referring to the following steps:
      a) Login to WordPress site dashboard
      b) Go to “ProfileGrid >> Global Settings >> Generals” menu
      c) An option of “Registration Page” will be listed here. Select the page having shortcode [PM_Registration ID=”x”] here x is group ID
      d) Default registration form will redirect here for the users. To redirect to other registration pages, enter the corresponding link directly in the menu. If user directs to registration page through groups page, control will be redirected to corresponding group registration page automatically.

    Hello,
Can Administrator add users to group without any users approval??

    Best regards

    1. ProfileGrid

Yes, administrator can add users in group without their approval using WordPress default “Add User” option. Admin can assign group (to user) with “User Groups” dropdown option available in “Add New User” form of WordPress.

      1. Maria

Hello, an administrator of a group can add a new user from the front end group profile? Thank you

        1. ProfileGrid Editorial Team

          Hi,

The administrator/Manager of a group can edit the user/post. He may send the invitation link to someone, and He/she can join the group by filling in the details.

  16. Radnoo

Hello, would like to give members a date when they were last logged in. Could it be possible?
    If so, how?

    1. ProfileGrid

ProfileGrid does not have feature to display last login date of a user. You can achieve this with integration of ProfileGrid with RegistrationMagic. If both the plugins are activated on site, ProfileGrid’s login form will be replaced by RegistrationMagic’s login form and Login Analytics feature of RegistrationMagic display the login details. For more details on this, you may visit the link : https://registrationmagic.com/wordpress-user-login-plugin-guide/

      1. Geo Radno

        Yes I have RegistrationMagic…

I wish on the front page last login date of a user…
        How can?
        Thanks

        1. ProfileGrid

As of now, there is no option to show last login date on Front Page. Only site admin may access information using Login Dashbaord of RegistrationMagic

Hi all, nice plugin. I’m having a couple of issues around user performances. First, they can’t change their profile picture (an admin_ajax.php error appears on browser console). Second, tab that display their blogs/post in their profiles only list up to 10 items, other post/blogs are’nt displaying. If you can help me I’ll appreciate it

    1. ProfileGrid Editorial Team

Could you please check it after deactivating all other plugins on the site, except for ProfileGrid? Then check if the issue is still there. If the issue is still occurring, we will require access details. Please reach out to us through our support page on our site and we can help you in order to allow us to assist you further.

Thanks for your quick answer. Issue with ajax-admin.php was from firewall plugin (Wordfence) I’m looking for solve it.

Can you help me with limit post list in their profiles? They can show up to 10 post/blog, and I don’t know if there’s any pagination or something to display the rest. If I remove one of them, then it will show the missing one. There’s a display limit I guess, what do you think?

        Thanks in advance.

Maybe I missed this somewhere but I am confused as to how a user can create a post on the group(s) they belong to and get it to show on the group’s page. All I see on the group’s page are the members.

    Thank you.

    1. ProfileGrid

You will be required to activate the Group wall extension on site to write the group post. for more details on this, please visit the link: https://profilegrid.co/how-allow-user-to-submit-post-and-upload-media-to-their-group-walls/

  21. Elena N

Well, this plugins doesn’t seem to work for me.
Upon activating the plugins (both of them Multiple Group Managers and Advanced Group Manager) no “Settings” tab shows up on frontpage and definitely no additional features for main manager or additional managers to play with.
Yea, backend there are a couple of things which changed but frontend doesn’t work or at least I don’t see it.

    1. ProfileGrid Editorial Team

Please make sure that you have enabled the setting tab option under “Individual Group Page (Applies to all Groups)” from “ProfileGrid >> Global Settings >> Elements visibility” in the dashboard.
